Last class we took a short quiz over our homework.  We reviewed civil liberties during the Civil War by creating visual representations of the conflict between civil liberties and the necessities of fighting a war. HOMEFUN FOR MONDAY 11/2: Please read documents 2 & 3 in the Document Pack 1.  Be sure to answer the questions for each, annotate the text, and keep a list of questions that come to mind.  Review the Socratic Seminar Assignment.

***Don’t fall behind on your reading for the seminar.  There are a lot of documents, and if you don’t keep up, you’ll have big problems as the seminar approaches.

For Thursday 10/29

Last class we discussed civil liberties in the Civil War by examining the cases of Clement Vallandigham and John Merryman. We took a brief reading quiz, and we practiced POVL with the Vallandigham Letter.   Civil Liberties in the Civil War

For Tues 10/27

Last class we took a short reading quiz over the homework – Course of War ’61-’62- , and we wrapped up our compare/contrast of the North & South at the start of the Civil War.  We discussed and wrote thesis statements for a sample Component 2 B-type question: “How far do you agree with the statement, ‘Due to its many advantages, victory for the North in the Civil War was inevitable.’”

HOMEWORK FOR TUESDAY 10/27: Please read the following article and take notes: Civil Liberties in Civ War. Tuesday seems like a great quiz day!

Also, make sure that you can address Friday’s question (see above) and that you have completed the assignment from Wednesday’s class! It is for a summative grade.

For Friday 10/23

Last class we continued comparisons of the North and the South on the eve of the Civil War including their motivations to fight and their political, economic, and military resources.  N vs. S Workshop

For Wed 10/21

Last class we did Component 2 of the Unit 2 assessment. See Trotter ASAP if you missed either part of the assessment.  We then  went over the Unit 3 Major Themes sheet and briefly discussed differences between the North and the South on the eve of the Civil War.  Organizer #1

HOMEWORK FOR WEDNESDAY 10/21: Please make sure you have read the MS Orders of Secession and the Strengths & Weaknesses article, and that you have filled in a good amount of your Organizer #1. This is the basis for a Component 2 A-type question.

If you have your own laptop or tablet, you may want to bring it Wednesday. We’ll be using computers and working again with shared documents.

Also, Mr. Douthit will be taking a group of students to London over Spring Break.  If you are already planning to go on this trip, or if you might be interested, plan to stay after school on Thursday 10/22 for an informational meeting.

For Mon 10/19 – Assessment pt. 2

Last class we took the first part of the Unit 2 assessment.  We’ll take do the documents section on Monday.  Make sure you study and that you are prepared!  We also briefly introduced Unit 3 by exploring the question, “How do we end conflict?”

HOMEWORK FOR THURS 10/15: Study for your assessment!!! This is a big deal.  You need to do well on this, and you can,  but you must prepare.  Use your Major Themes sheet, the Unit 2 Review, and the Sample Component 1 (page 4)  that we went over in class on Tuesday.  Practice writing as many of these as you can.  Here is the rubric that I will use to grade you: AICE Rubrics.   See the videos, articles, and other resources on the Unit 2 tab above.

Assessment Format Change: In the interest of having adequate time, we will do only Component 2 in class on Thursday.  See the Unit 2 Review for sample questions & instructions and the rubric above for how it will be graded.  We’ll do Component 1 (the document questions) in class on Monday 10/19.

Please bring a blue or black ink pen and several sheets of paper.  Be prepared to get started at the very beginning of class.  Check with your classmates or email Trotter with any questions you  might have.

For Tues 10/13 – Fall Break Edition

Last class we continued discussing arguments about secession by comparing & contrasting arguments for and against it.  We looked at a sample Component 1 paper which asks students to compare & contrast various documents.  Sample Component 1 paper and general rubric are here: Sample Component 1 – June ’15 #13     Rubric     We also continued the Ken Burns video on Causes of the Civil War.

HOMEWORK FOR TUES 10/13: You have a major assessment after the break. I hope you’ll enjoy your time off, but please look over some of your notes a bit.  We’ll review the Tuesday you return, but please don’t wait until then.  There is too much stuff just to pack into one day of review.  Look over your Major Themes Sheet, check out Crash Course videos on YouTube, scan through your notes, and check out the sample Component 1 & Rubric above.
